Halloween Dance!

On October 31st, Dr. Kearney will be having a pre-trick-or-treat monster mash!
The dance will take place in the gym and all students from Dr. Kearney are welcome to attend. It will start at approximately 1:30 and will run until the end of the school day at 3:11.

A small entrance fee will be charged: $1 for students wearing a costume and $2 for students without a costume. Half of the proceeds will go towards our school’s fundraising efforts to support the Terry Fox Foundation for cancer research. The other half will go back into funding other school activities at Dr. Kearney.

Students who do not wish to attend the dance will have the opportunity to participate in alternate activities throughout the school. This dance is open only to Dr. Kearney students, guests are not permitted. 

School Pictures

We are still waiting for our school pictures to arrive and anticipate that they will arrive soon. The picture packages will be handed out in TAG as soon as they arrive.

Should re-takes be necessary, they are scheduled for Friday November 3rd.

Grade 7 Country Harvest!

We know our grade seven students will become leaders of Dr. Kearney Middle School. In order to help them succeed, we had some grade seven students take a leadership role in creating an event, The Country Harvest, for their peers. Over the past month, the leadership group has met with Mrs. Gorsic during their lunch hours to plan all aspects of the event. They have created interactive activities and planned music for a dance at the Country Harvest. Students have demonstrated great commitment and learned a multitude of skills that will help them in all aspects of building a positive community.

We would like to thank the grade seven students that organized and volunteered to supervise stations during our event. Many other students/parents donated their time and made food for our bake sale to help us have more events this school year. Our staff here at Dr. Kearney have been very accommodating and also spent time with the students to help them put on the event. Thank you to everyone for a successful and very fun event.   – Mr. Logan 

DK Athletics

It has been a busy month for athletics at Dr. Kearney with volleyball and cross country running in full swing. The Grade 9 girls volleyball team was in Grande Prairie for the first tournament of the year and played very well. The Grade 8 and Grade 7 girls had their first tournament of the year Thursday evening at Clearview. Both teams played exceptionally well with the Grade 7’s taking home the win! Our Grade 7 boys team have been keeping busy practicing and are excited to put their skills to test. All teams have games coming up and the schedule is posted in the gym.

The cross country runners ran in multiple races including Kin Park and Dawson Creek. All runners gave it their all and represented Dr. Kearney very well. They will be off to more races throughout October.

A huge thank you to all coaches and teacher sponsors for making this first month a success! We could not do it without you!

Basketball season is fast approaching and sign up will be happening in the next couple weeks. We are also looking for coaches who can commit to the basketball season. Please contact Ms. Davidson for more information.

October at DKMS

We have a busy October ahead of us at DK. Teachers will be sending home interim reports towards the end of October and early November. We also launched our major fundraiser for the year, see yesterday’s post for more information or contact Mr. Cimini or Mrs. Thompson.

Charlie’s Chocolate Factory Fundraiser

We are excited to announce we are partnering with Charlie’s Chocolate Factory (a British Columbia based company) for our major school fundraiser this year. The money earned goes towards student activities such as the Winter Luncheon, Winter & Summer Fun Days, and student recognition.

Each student has received a catalogue and order form. The order form is for cheque or cash purchases only. Please make cheques payable to Dr. Kearney Middle School. More order forms are available at the school office.

Orders must be placed on-line or returned to the school by Friday November 10th. The orders will arrive at the school around December 1st and students will deliver orders by December 22nd.

Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA)

What is the FSA?

The Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) is a set of reading, writing, and numeracy assessments administered to BC students every year in Grades 4 and 7. They are the first two of four provincial assessments: Grade 4 FSA, Grade 7 FSA, and the graduation assessments in Literacy and Numeracy.

What is the purpose of the FSA?

The FSA provides a “snapshot” of how well BC students are doing in key foundational areas. The results help answer important questions, such as:

  • Are all students learning vital skills they will need in school and in life?
  • Is student achievement improving over time?
  • Are there any trends in student performance at the school, district, or provincial levels?

Along with classroom assessment information, the FSA provides valuable information to parents on how their child is performing in reading, writing, and numeracy.

Grade 7 students at Dr. Kearney will start writing the FSA between October 2 and November 10. Parents will receive their student’s results after the assessments are scored in November.

Book Fair!

DKMS will be hosting a Book Fair on Oct 23-27. Parents are encouraged to attend during the afternoons in the Library or after school on Oct 24th and 26th. The attached pamphlet is a taste of what we will have available. All monies made from the sales will go towards replenishing the library books and updating our non-fiction section too. Any parents who would like to help are welcome to see Mrs.Bennett to offer their support.
